Sampurna Basu has been promoting vernacular literature in the Indian community in the United States for more than 30 years. She is a professor of English at Emory University and has received many awards for her work, including three Pushcart Prizes. She is also one of the founders of AmeriCasa Books publishing company, which was founded with women’s rights and education in mind. A prolific writer herself, she has published more than 50 books and 100 articles on Indian culture and literary history. Her most recent publication is her memoir ‘Vairagya: Stories of Hope and Sacrifice'. She has received many awards, among them: Sampurna Basu was born in the village Sahebparasia, West Bengal, India and raised in a family of writers. She graduated from Dibrugarh College and received her master's degree from the Utkal University. Later, she studied at Jamia Millia Islamia and worked as a faculty member at several institutions such as Akhil Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (Bengali Academy), Sahitya Akademi (Indian Academy of Letters), CCS (Chapters for Creative Studies) and The Commonwealth Writers' Group. She is currently a professor of English at Emory University, Atlanta. Sampurna Basu is the daughter of late poet Palki Basu, who has written more than 80 books in Hindi, Bengali and English. Sampurna Basu's mother is also a writer. Her father is said to have encouraged her interest in literature at an early age. She grew up in India in a family of writers with her mother who has written more than 80 books in Hindi, Bengali and English. From an early age, she was interested in literature and was encouraged by her father Palki to pursue it. Her father was also a writer himself. As a child, she was encouraged to read by her mother. Her mother, Basanti Basu, is the author of numerous Hindi novels. When she wrote "What Hath God Wrought" (translated into many languages) she became the first Indian woman to win the international Grand Prix de l'Academie Francaise. She earned her bachelor's degree in English Literature from Dibrugarh College and later received an M.A. from the Utkal University. She then worked as a faculty member at several institutions such as Akhil Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (Bengali Academy), Sahitya Akademi (Indian Academy of Letters), CCS (Chapters for Creative Studies) and The Commonwealth Writers' Group. Sampurna Basu was among the founders of AmeriCasa Books publishing company, which was founded with women’s rights and education in mind. The company also publishes translations works, thus taking empowerment to another level.
